Project Overview
The University of Rochester pursued construction of a new $8 million Catholic Center on its campus in Rochester, New York, an approximately 8,000 GSF building occupying a vacant lot adjacent to Wilson Boulevard between Library Road and Faculty Road. The program centered on a sanctuary with narthex and a community room with commercial kitchen, supported by offices, restrooms, storage, and mechanical space. The project required careful attention to existing below-grade utility infrastructure, with storm and sanitary sewer lines running approximately 15 feet beneath the site. Electrical connections were available from the adjacent Goergen Athletic Center, with an opportunity to incorporate a roof-mounted solar array and ground-mounted battery storage. The client engaged PRESWERX to produce renderings and animations for the pursuit.
Client Challenges
A small but architecturally significant campus building like a Catholic Center carries expectations that go beyond square footage. The client needed visuals that could address several distinct challenges:
Conveying the design quality and sacred character of a sanctuary building to a university owner evaluating how the new center would fit within the established campus fabric.
Showing the building in its specific site context, a constrained infill lot between two campus roads adjacent to an existing athletic facility, in a way that made the placement feel purposeful.
Communicating the dual-use nature of the program, with a sanctuary and community gathering space serving different but complementary needs within a compact 8,000 SF footprint.
The pursuit required imagery that honored the building's spiritual purpose while demonstrating its fit within a rigorous university campus setting.
Scope of Work
PRESWERX produced architectural renderings and animations for the client's University of Rochester Catholic Center pursuit. Renderings depicted the proposed building on its infill site, showing the exterior character and how the structure related to the surrounding campus context, including its adjacency to the Goergen Athletic Center and the Wilson Boulevard streetscape. Interior perspectives captured the quality of the sanctuary and community room spaces, giving evaluators a sense of how the building would feel in use. Animations brought the project to life in motion, walking viewers through the exterior arrival sequence and into the key program spaces to convey the building's dual purpose as both a place of worship and a community gathering point.
PRESWERX Approach
