Project Overview

Johns Hopkins University's Data Science and Translation Institute represented a landmark academic research development in Baltimore, encompassing two new buildings totaling 500,000 gross square feet. The program included 400,000 GSF of dry lab and departmental space alongside 100,000 GSF of wet lab facilities, with building infrastructure designed to accommodate future expansion to 200,000 GSF of wet lab capacity. The project also required extensive site and campus integration, below-grade parking for approximately 400 vehicles, and dedicated loading and waste removal facilities. The client engaged PRESWERX to develop the pursuit proposal, presentation materials, and coaching to prepare the team for the competitive selection.

Client Challenges

Pursuing a 500,000 GSF academic research campus required translating an ambitious and technically complex program into a story that connected with a sophisticated institutional owner. The client faced several distinct challenges:

  • Communicating the scale and phasing of a two-building research campus in a way that resonated with a non-construction audience

  • Differentiating the team in a competitive pursuit for a high-profile university research facility

  • Preparing to deliver a confident, unified presentation in a live selection setting

Each challenge required pursuit materials and coaching that matched Johns Hopkins University's high expectations.

Scope of Work

PRESWERX developed a comprehensive suite of pursuit materials tailored to the complexity and scale of the Johns Hopkins Data Science and Translation Institute. The team produced a full pursuit proposal capturing the client's technical qualifications, project approach, and team differentiation in a format designed for an academic owner evaluating multiple competitive submissions. PRESWERX also developed presentation materials that organized the program's scope, phasing, and research facility expertise into a clear and visual narrative. Alongside these deliverables, PRESWERX provided presentation coaching to align the team around a consistent message and prepare individual presenters for the live selection.

PRESWERX Approach

PRESWERX approached the pursuit as a strategic communications challenge, building materials from the owner's perspective rather than the contractor's. The team focused on three priorities:

  • Structuring the proposal narrative around the client's research facility expertise and the program requirements set by Johns Hopkins University

  • Developing presentation visuals that translated 500,000 GSF of complex lab programming into a clear and compelling story for a university audience

  • Running coaching sessions to sharpen individual presenter delivery and unify the team around a single message

The result was a pursuit package that gave the client's team clarity and confidence heading into selection.

Results Delivered

PRESWERX delivered a complete pursuit package built to the standard a top-tier research institution expected. Each deliverable directly strengthened the client's position:

  • The proposal presented the client's qualifications and project approach in a format calibrated to Johns Hopkins University's evaluation expectations

  • The presentation materials translated a complex, 500,000 GSF research program into a clear, visual narrative

  • Presentation coaching unified the team's message and prepared individual presenters for high-stakes live delivery

The client entered the selection with materials and preparation that matched the ambition of the project.
